What is Diogenes?

An innovative multi-disciplinary, multi-centre research project to advance understanding of how obesity can be prevented and treated from a dietary perspective. It integrates studies of dietary, genetic, physiological and psychological/behavioural factors.

- Its full title is “Diet, Obesity and Genes”

-  Diogenes is supported by 14.5 million Euros of EU funding, under the Food Quality and Safety Priority of the Sixth Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development of the European Union, through the Directorate-General for Research of the European Commission. The total project budget will be 20.1 million Euros.

- The five-year programme involves a consortium of 29 partners across Europe. It is made up of world-class centres in diet-and health studies, epidemiology, dietary genomics and food technology. It also includes 3 major food industrials and 5 Small- and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs).

-  Based on the new knowledge generated, the project will demonstrate prototypes of innovative products or advice regimes which will help susceptible individuals to avoid weight gain and re-gain, and link with implementers to facilitate commercialisation in the market place.

The project started in January 2005
